šŸŒž Summer Beagle Care: Heat Safety, Hydration, and Pool Time!

Summer’s here, and while we’re soaking up the sun in the South Bay, our beagles are feeling the heat too! ā˜€ļøšŸ¾ Whether you’re taking your pup out for a walk along the coast, planning a beach day, or just hanging out in the backyard, it’s important to keep our floppy-eared friends safe and comfortable during warmer weather.

Here’s how we keep Ace and Skye happy, hydrated, and cool all summer long—with tips, tricks, and a few fun ideas you can try with your own beagle!

ā˜€ļø Beagle + Heat = A Risky Combo

Beagles are energetic, adventurous, and very curious—but they’re also prone to overheating, especially with their thick coats and go-go-go personalities. They don’t always know when to slow down (sound familiar?), so it’s up to us to help them stay safe.

Watch for signs of overheating:

  • Excessive panting

  • Lethargy

  • Drooling

  • Bright red or pale gums

  • Wobbliness or confusion

If you notice any of these, get them into the shade, offer water, and cool them down with a fan or wet towel. In serious cases, contact your vet immediately.

šŸ• Best Times to Walk in Summer

In the South Bay, the pavement can get scorching hot—especially in the afternoons. If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your beagle’s paws!

Our rule of paw:

  • Walks before 9 AM or after 7 PM

  • Stick to grassy parks or shaded trails

  • Bring portable water bowls (we clip ours to the leash!)

  • Use paw balm before and after walks to protect their pads

Ace and Skye still get their full one-mile walk in, but we adjust the route based on the weather. A quick potty break at noon? Sure. A full hike at noon? Nope.

šŸ’§ Hydration Station

Beagles are active—and in summer, they need even more water than usual. We always have fresh, cool water available indoors and outdoors.

Summer hydration tips:

  • Add ice cubes to their water bowls

  • Try a doggy hydration lick mat (we freeze low-sodium broth or watermelon puree)

  • Bring a water bottle and collapsible bowl on every outing

  • Watch for signs of dehydration: dry nose, sunken eyes, sluggish behavior

We also mix in a little extra water with their kibble at dinner for added moisture, and they love frozen watermelon cubes as treats!

šŸ–ļø Pool Time = Beagle Bliss

Not all beagles love the water, and we’ve got both ends of the spectrum at home!

Ace doesn’t like getting wet—he prefers to supervise from the sidelines. So when it’s hot, we make sure he stays cool with plenty of shade, water, and frozen treats. He’s all about the lounging life. šŸ˜Ž

Skye, on the other paw, LOVES the water! We bought them a foldable doggy pool, and Skye turns into a splash queen every time we fill it up. She jumps in, plays with her toys, and cools off like a pro. It’s become one of her favorite summer activities!

Safety tip: Never force your beagle into water. Let them explore at their own pace, and always supervise playtime around any pool (even the shallow ones).

You can also wet a towel and lay it on the grass as a ā€œcool zone,ā€ or grab a misting fan for extra relief during really hot days. Both of those have helped Ace stay comfy while Skye’s living her best splashy life.

šŸ¦ Summer Treats (That Won’t Overheat)

Beagles are always hungry, but some snacks are better for hot days than others. Here are some summer-safe options that Ace and Skye love:

  • Frozen banana + plain yogurt pup pops

  • Frozen carrots or green beans

  • Dog-safe watermelon cubes (seedless!)

  • Ice cubes with a tiny spoonful of peanut butter inside

Just avoid anything too salty or sweet, and steer clear of xylitol and other toxic ingredients.

🐶 Bonus Summer Tips

  • Shade over style: We love dressing our pups up, but skip the heavy costumes during the summer. Lightweight bandanas (like Ace’s Bluey birthday one!) are perfect.

  • Flea & tick checks: With more outdoor time, be sure to check your beagle’s fur daily.

  • No car time—ever: Even with the windows cracked, the inside of a car can become dangerous in minutes.

🌓 Let’s Keep Summer Safe & Fun

Summer can be a blast for beagles—with just a few extra precautions. Whether you’re heading to the park, lounging in the backyard, or going on a road trip, making small adjustments can help your pup stay cool, safe, and full of tail wags.

We’d love to hear how your beagle is spending the summer! ā˜€ļø
